Why Nursing?
The infamous question - why did I choose to pursue nursing? What a layered question.
Ever since I can remember, I have loved people. It sounds cheesy, but I really am a "people person." Being in the presence of others genuinely brings me joy. My nurturing demeanor resulted in me always wanting to help others in any way I could. I had always known I wanted to do something in the medical field, however it wasn't until a few years ago that I knew I wanted to become a nurse. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2016. My mom and I are very close, and this was an extremely scary time for us. She underwent many surgeries and weeks of radiation. Although her doctors were amazing, it was the nursing care that really stood out to us and helped us cope with the unfortunate situation. They were so empathetic and knowledgeable about her condition, which really helped put our minds at ease. Although this situation was horrible at the time, I learned so much about the nursing profession and about myself, and that was when I knew nursing was the right path for me. I think this experience is a huge reason as to why I connect with most of my patients with ease.
Going through nursing school has been a challenge, but it has already been so rewarding. My mom will forever be my role model and my #1 motivator, however the response I get from most of my patients does just the same. I love the relationships I am able to make with my patients and other members of the health care team. To me, nursing is more than checking an order as complete or repeating the same daily care tasks. Nursing is an opportunity to connect with a patient and have a positive influence on their care. Being in the hospital can be extremely stressful and disruptive to one's life, but being able to play a role in their care means a lot to me. Nurses can make or break a hospital experience and I feel very fortunate that I am able to play such a significant role in one's life.
